April 20 - Minor football announces expansion to the atom level. April 27 - Yorkton's Suzanne Mitchell competes for a position on the TaeKwonDo Olympic referee team. Sacred Heart High School does well at the badminton districts.

Paul Toth of the YRHS senior football team goes airborne to make a catch during Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association 12-man football action this season at the Century Field. Toth went on to be nominated for a defensive player of the year award in November at the RIFL banquet.

May 11 -

City employee Brian Dudar helps to kickstart the sport of disc golf in Yorkton. He goes and does some digging for some blueprints of a course proposal for Yorkton's Patrick Park. Construction crews go to work on a 9-hole disc golf course that enjoys some popularity in its first summer in Yorkton.

"The disc golf facility saw tremendous use in its first year of operation and was well received by the community," says Dudar. He is already making plans to ensure the sport sees even more action next year, based on its success last summer.

"There was great use by the schools and by the general public. Efforts will be made to organize a disc golf club and run a disc golf night similar to what is done with regular golf. Look for that information in April of 2012. The great thing with disc golf is that the course is open year round so get out there and let the discs fly!"

Ball hockey starts up with a league in Yorkton, added to already established leagues in Moose Jaw and Prince Albert.

May 18 -

The McSweeney's Selects volleyball team plays at the nationals in British Columbia.

The GSSD held their annual track and field meet that week, a qualifier for the East Central District track meet. Four records were broken by students age Gr. 8 and lower


June 8 -

Yorkton teenage golf talent Kade Johnson finishes in first place in a golf tournament held in Saskatoon.

June 15 -

York Lake Golf and Country Club introduces a new chef to the staff. Sherwin Sarancho, introduces a completely re-done menu of items to both members of the golf club and non members. New items he serves include Philadelphia Cheese Steak sandwiches, BBQ chicken wraps and six different hamburgers and the club serves breakfast all day long.

June 22 -

Yorkton Minor Football holds their annual season ending scrimmage at the Century Field. Over 100 kids take part in the day's schedule which featured non-stop football from 4 p.m., to well after 9 p.m.

City of Yorkton unveils their first-ever disc golf course, located at Patrick Park.

June 29

The Freedom Tour Skate Jam, a local group trying to promote skateboarding in and around Yorkton, holds their third annual skate show at the Gallagher Centre.

Not long after that, Tucker Chornomud and some friends headed to Esterhazy to put on their second show.

National Canoe Day is held at the York Lake club.


July 6 -

The WMBL Cardinals won four games in a row in the previous weeks' action and five of their last six.

July 20 -

Yorkton Junior Cardinal player Ross Stilborn hits the first grand slam on a cold Monday night during the South East Senior Baseball League playoff action.

The Western Major Baseball League Yorkton Cardinals win two games in two tries on home field.

James Green would go on to set a new league record for stolen bases the following night (July 28) when the club headed to Weyburn to conclude the regular season. Yorkton put together an 8-2 win.


Aug. 3 -

Two local 10-year-olds head to the West Edmonton Mall to play in an indoor hockey tournament.

Aug.10 -

The Yorkton Junior Cardinals with their third South East Senior Baseball League championship, on home field against the Willowbrook Royals.

Aug. 17 -

Local representation at the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony. It is held in Battleford. It includes Larry Orth (Esterhazy), Wally Harasen (Yorkton area), and Ed Stefureak (Yorkton baseball contributions).

Skateboarders from Yorkton make the trip to Wawota as part of the Freedom Tour Skate Jam. It turns out to be a huge success.

Local TaeKwonDo students travel to Korea.

Aug. 24 -

Brent Brown and Mel Oystrick finish 1-2 at the Deer Park Municipal Golf Course Men's Open.

Over 250 take part in the Charity Road Race on a Sunday morning at the Yorkton Regional High School parking lot.

Matt Kustra, a 14-year-old from Yorkton goes to the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame for hockey and football.

Aug. 31 -

First atom football game held in Yorkton.

YRHS junior football team wins 14-8 against the Regina Renegades at home.


The YRHS junior football team begins to enjoy their first taste of winning.


Oct. 12

Yorkton Pee Wee Gridder season comes to an end on Thanksgiving weekend at Liebel Field in Regina against the Regina Thunder.

Current Rider Jerrell Freeman and Hugh Charles, formerly of the Riders came to Yorkton to help promote Yorkton Minor Football at the Yorkton Co-op.

Oct. 26 -

The YRHS senior boys' football team season comes to an end at Mosaic Stadium at Taylor Field against the Miller Comprehensive High school.

Sacred Heart's girls soccer team goes to provincials


Sacred Heart's senior boys volleyball team advances to the provincial championships of Saskatchewan high school athletics volleyball action. The team goes up north to Wilkie, almost gets humbled by a team of Gr. 9s from Meadow Lake, but would finish well.

Nov. 2 -

Sacred Heart's senior boys football season comes to an end on a snowy day in Melfort. On the same day, their boys' soccer team goes into a shootout with Evan Hardy of Saskatoon and wins the championship after Nathan Ruff scored the difference maker.

Nov. 16 -

The bantam UCT Terrier hockey team is chosen as one of the minor hockey teams to announce the matchups on the CBC's Hockey Night in Canada. CBC's Neil Cochrane visits Yorkton from Regina to tape some B-reel at the Kinsmen Arena. The Terrier team is on TV on Saturday night announcing the Leafs/Capitals game that night.

The Sacred Heart senior boys volleyball team qualifies for regional playdowns following their conference tournament where they finished first.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League inducts four individuals into its Hall of Fame (Gene Krepakevich, Darrell Spelay-SJHL's all time leading goal scorer, Gerry James, and Terry Struthers).

The YRHS holds their annual football awards night at the Ukrainian Orthodox Auditorium. Among the winners is Josh Moreira. Despite not being able to play with the team in his last year of high school eligibility, he joins the coaching staff as a special teams coach and wins the Rudy award. Earlier in the school year, he won the Student of Distinction award. He was also the first student to ever be given that honour.


Yorkton Harvest play to a tie with the Regina Pat Canadians. It is their first draw of the season, leaving only three teams in the league without a tie on their record (Prince Albert, Notre Dame and the Battlefords).

That same weekend, they put together a nine-goal effort in North Battleford against the Stars. Jaden Kreklewich supplies his first hat trick with the Harvest and the power play operated at 50 per cent efficiency, scoring four goals on eight opportunities.

Former Harvest netminder Kale Thomson records his first shutout in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League action that weekend, blanking the Notre Dame Hounds 5-0 in front of his home crowd. Santa Clause also leaves John Odgers' first ever SJHL goal under the tree too.

Both the Harvest and Terriers head to the Christmas break with wins under their belts. Coincidentally, both wins came by large margins (9-3 and 5-0)
