YUFC claims gold in Winnipeg

The Yorkton United Football Club’s U16 boys’ team travelled to Winnipeg last weekend for the 2017 Winnipeg Golden Boy tournament.

The Yorkton United Football Club’s U16 boys’ team travelled to Winnipeg last weekend for the 2017 Winnipeg Golden Boy tournament.

The team was able to fight back from a 2-0 deficit in the final game to force extra time, and eventually won the gold medal after a round of penalty kicks. They won by a final score of 3-2 over the Bismarch United ND U16 boys’ team.  

The team’s first game of the tournament was against Bismarch, where they came out with a 1-0 loss. The man of the match award in this game went to Thomas Djagowez.

Their second game of the tournament was played against Bonavital, and Yorkton won with a 6-0 shutout. Austin Stewart recorded the shutout in net, and Nick Fetsch won the man of the match with his two goals and three assists.

Yorkton’s third game was played against Winnipeg, and it ended with a 3-1 victory. The man of the match, again, was Nick Fetsch. He scored all three goals for Yorkton.

In the final against Bismarch U16B team, the regular time ended with a score of 2-2. Those two goals came from Jairus Pellatt and Nick Fetsch.

When the game went to penalty kicks, the goal scorers were Nick Fetsch, Zach Wasylyshen and Nick Nesseth. The man of the match was Austin Stewart (keeper) who saved three penalty shots.

Next up for the boys is the provincial tournament, which will be held in two weeks. The team is coached by Mike Jakubiec (head coach) and Glen Gelowitz (assistant coach and manager).
