The Yorkton United Football Club (YUFC) U12 girls Tornadoes started their tournament season by winning silver at the Lakewood Kickstart Soccer tournament in Saskatoon on Nov 11-12.
The girls began the round robin against Lloydminster Drillers and although the Lloyd team was very aggressive and pressed the Yorkton girls, Yorkton came out with a 2-1 win. Kirsi Kitch scored both goals for Yorkton.
In game two, Yorkton’s opponent was Saskatoon Aurora Ice. The Tornadoes came out on top with a 4-1 win. Kirsi Kitch scored her third and fourth of the tournament, Jaya Code and Avery Bond added singles.
In the final game of the round robin, Yorkton continued its winning ways with a third straight win over Saskatoon Lakewood Lightning. Tornado trumped Lightning in this game as the Yorkton girls dominated with a 6-1 victory. Avery Bond scored two goals, Angela Fetsch, Addisyn Jakubiec and Jaya Code added singles and Yorkton scored on an own goal by the Lakewood keeper.
The three victories in the round robin advanced the Yorkton team to the final where they would once again face the Lloydminster team.
This time Yorkton came out on the losing end. Lloyd opened the scoring midway through the first half. With five minutes remaining in the first half, Angela Fetsch tied the game on a beautiful free kick but shortly after Lloyd scored what proved to be the winner. With no goals being scored in the second half, the final remained 2-1 in favour of the Drillers.
Coaches Jeanne Fetsch and Bailey Inglis were happy with their team’s start. “There are several inexperienced players on the team but all the girls played with heart and gave their best effort on the field,” said Fetsch.
Jaya Code played great as a rookie keeper. Angela Fetsch, Addisyn Jakubiec and Avery Bond kept the scoring chances to a minimum as they played a strong defensive role.
Kirsi Kitch is developing into a fine young striker with much improved touches on the ball and is being rewarded by getting the ball into the back of the net.
The Tornadoes will continue to work on improving their basic skill, their positional play and their touch with the ball as they prepare for their next tournament in mid-December in Regina.
