The Beauty #3
Writer: Jeremy Haun & Jason A. Hurley
Art: Jeremy Haun
Image Comics
The Beauty is one of those comics that sits right on the razor’s edge of whether I will drop it from the ‘must read’ list moving forward, or keep going deeper into the series.
Now it’s not that the story is subpar. The idea of The Beauty is a sexually transmitted disease which leaves those with the disease becoming beautiful. Fat melts away, balding hair returns etc., is solid enough.
And the downside which emerged in the first issue of those with the disease eventually self-combusting is actually pretty cool.
That the danger was known and being covered up to allow development of a treatment (one that would make millions) is not that far-fetched, so rings true.
That sounds like I like the story, and I suppose I have, although I am not exactly excited by the prospect of the next issue, which tells me the series is, well as I said sort of middle of the road, leaving me non-committed, but not exactly unhappy with it either.
The next issue is going to be a deal breaker I suspect. It takes the game up a notch to keep me interested, or I may be investing my reading time elsewhere.
Will Eisner’s The Spirit #3
Written by Matt Wagner
Art by Dan Schkade
Dynamite Entertainment
The Spirit has been missing, and his P.I. friends Strunk and White are looking for leads.
A good chunk of issue #3 has the duo questioning Sand Saref about her last encounter with The Spirit. Her re-telling of the events is pure Spirit-magic.
The meeting with Saref in jail does not give a lead on The Spirit’s disappearance they wanted, but it made for great reading.
Of course by the end of the issue things change, but to say how would be to spoil the surprise.
Love The Spirit and you are going to like what writer Matt Wagner is doing, and how the art of Dan Schkade fits the vintage feel of the overall effort perfectly too.
