Canora resident encourages voters not to go with the 'same old, same old'

Here we go again.

Here we go again. It’s the same old, same old!

Where are the businessmen and women in the Town of Canora who are absolutely astute at running business, and who can bring new customers, business, and money into our community?

Instead, it appears that we will be stuck with the same old crew of wage earners hoping that they can run town business without any business experience whatsoever. The best thing that wage earners know how to do is spend money on frivolous matters, such as the electric sign board in front of town hall that is impossible to read as you drive by. If anything, it creates a traffic hazard and duplicates what comes through the mail, which serves no practical purpose.

What about the money spent on the boondoggle of a development of vacant lots by the golf course, which is wasting taxpayers’ money? Are we supposed to trust these people with our money?

Furthermore, is it not the highest priority of the mayor and councillors to protect the safety of the community? Our safety has never been spoken of in the past 20 years that I can remember. Consider the fact that trucks with dangerous goods continue to travel through our community, one of the most dangerous being anhydrous ammonia. Several years ago, a truck was leaking in town. Anhydrous gas is so dangerous that it can kill almost immediately, but no action was taken by council. Peripheral roads are available for trucks carrying dangerous goods, as well as heavily-laden grain trucks that are ruining our streets. No bylaw was created to enforce the use of those peripheral roads for dangerous goods and heavy traffic.

How can we accept these same councillors that run time after time, using the streets of Canora, to completely ignore the dangerous traffic congestion on Main Street between the train station and the post office? A way to correct this would be the installation of a traffic light at the conjunction of Highway 5 and Main Street. This will slow the traffic down and prevent drivers from having to pull into the intersection to observe oncoming traffic.

A problem that has been ignored for the past number of years is the congestion around the post office. A great danger is put on residents who attempt to cross the street for their mail. There is no reason that there cannot be a traffic light at this junction. The old council ignored this problem, but perhaps a new council of businesspeople will make these changes in the interests of public safety.

If our community is interested in changing this gang of same olds, then it is up to the citizens to encourage candidates who will have the safety of the community in mind, rather than a group of worn-out self-serving candidates who need to get soaking wet to know it is raining.

            Submitted without prejudice,

            Len Jackson
