It's disappointing to learn Rona is no longer coming to Yorkton. Depending on who you talk to, it's an incredible story. But, they were essentially here already and are now in the process of pulling out. I'm not going to get into it within my column because my writings are, simply, opinion based and shouldn't be taken as fact. But, I do think if you were expecting to be a customer, it would be in your best interests to talk to Kelvin Prychak as well as a city alderman to make sure you are properly informed. I also think if you are looking to be a business owner in Yorkton, make sure you talk to as many people as you can before making a commitment. That includes city officials as well as other business owners and, definitely, the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce as well as members of the Economic Development Committee.
With Home Hardware set to expand across 7th Avenue North, you will see that access through 7th Avenue North between Smith and Broadway is now closed. One city official mentioned to me a while back that he expects to see a significant increase in traffic flow on Dracup in light of the closure. I'm hoping the City has determined there is enough traffic to install a green arrow for those making a left hand turn when coming out of Dracup and getting on to Broadway.
I had a blast at the Painted Casino's Dine In The Dark supper that was held in support of the CNIB last Thursday night. CNIB officials and clients were on hand to 'coach' us through our meal as we wore blindfolds. I can tell you that within mere seconds I had two fingers in the butter that was supposed to go on my bun. I improved just enough to get through the Sorbet just fine. Or so I thought. I ended up taking my blindfold off and noticed half of it pushed up against the side of the cup. The main course had me delicately cutting thin air with my knife and then, it seemed, I alternated between massive bites and itty bitty teeny tiny ones. By the way, the meal was unbelievably good. I'm a person who went through most of my young life with very bad vision. I couldn't even look at an alarm clock without having to throw on my glasses. I value my sight as it is, and yet I still left that supper with a whole new appreciation for being able to see things. I remember having corrective surgery done on my eyes in 2004 and from that day forward I've had difficulty coming to grips with how a professional athlete or movie star can make $20 million a year playing a sport, but my eye doctor makes a fraction of that. Don't get me wrong, they do well too but let's put the two jobs in perspective.
Saskatoon's police chief is fed up with the number of vehicle thefts in his city as well as with vehicle owners who make it easy for people to steal these vehicles. That's right. Point the finger at the law abiding citizen. I, instead, point the finger at the accused. The case I'm talking about is the one that resulted in the senseless and needless deaths of two teenagers who were struck by a 21-year-old woman driving a stolen truck. The woman has a lengthy history of vehicle arrests and a track record of always getting released by whoever is the judge. It will never ever happen in a million years, but wouldn't it be nice if victims of crime could sue a judge for putting a menace to society back on the street.
I, often, have joked that in order to be found guilty for a crime it will reach a point where video evidence will be the only form that's accepted to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. Well, sometimes not even a video is good enough. The Crown says there is not sufficient evidence to secure a conviction against a hunter who is seen in a video riding a wounded deer down a hill.
I missed it last year, but two years ago I ran in the Salamander in Saltcoats. It's a great little fundraiser for the community and you can do a 5k or a 10k. You can also walk if you so desireand the scenery is gorgeous.
Work has begun on Highway-9 again between Fort Qu'Appelle and Regina, so budget your time accordingly if making a trek in from Yorkton. I was there over the weekend and it set me back about 10 minutes..
