A wise lady named Gladys Bronwyn Stern once said “Silent gratitude isn’t much use to anyone.” I think the same goes for compliments! I know gardeners are always very encouraging and complimentary, so right now I want to send out a compliment to the gardeners at our various seniors residences in town; their planters are absolutely amazing! Keep up the great work; you are doing a wonderful job to beautify not only your living space, but the city as well!
Another compliment goes out to the gardeners who have limited space but are making their front step, their back step, their balcony or their deck a thing of beauty with plants! You are teaching us that great gardening can happen anywhere!
Yorkton has so many wonderful gardeners, so please consider entering the “Yorkton In Bloom” competition; the deadline is Friday, July 10 at 4:00 PM. For more information about the contest, or to register, just call (306) 786-1776. Don’t be shy!
Since we’re celebrating gardening, this is a good time to invite you to the Yorkton and District Horticultural Society “Annual Fruit, Flower, and Vegetable Show”, Tuesday, August 11 from 1:00 – 5:00 PM at St. Gerard’s Parish Complex. Please mark that date on your calendar! The show gives you a chance to see a wide and beautiful selection of plants and floral displays, and you can also enjoy tea and dainties and a good visit! What a lovely way to spend a summer afternoon! Please plan to join us, and bring a friend!
And if you are ready for a little gardening holiday, you might want to consider the Saskatchewan Horticultural Association Annual Bus Tour. This is a three day “gardener’s getaway” that takes place July 17, 18 and 19. Saskatoon is the base for this tour which goes to local gardens as well as places of special horticultural interest such as the greenhouses, orchards, test plots, and Patterson arboretum at the University of Saskatchewan; a micro green grower, Meewasin, a grower that specializes in cut flowers for market sales, and much more! The fee includes most meals, accommodations and admission fees; all you have to do it get on the bus, relax, and enjoy! If you are interested, call Denise at (306) 331-9181. Any interested gardeners are welcome!
When you finally have a moment to sit in the shade and relax, be sure to check out the website for the Yorkton and District Horticultural Society at www.yorktonhort.ca to find out what’s happening with the group! There are so many gardeners in Yorkton; I hope that you will consider joining the group in the fall. We meet once a month and always have interesting speakers and presentations at every meeting. If you can’t make it to every meeting, no worries! You’re welcome whenever you are able to attend. Think about it, it would be lovely to have you join us!
Something to think about: several people have commented about sprays in their yards. Their comments all zeroed in on consideration for the birds and animals, and for neighbors’ yards. In short, if you feel you must spray for weeds or pests, do some homework and try to choose a product that is least damaging to everything else, follow label directions carefully, and don’t spray on a windy day. You’d be amazed at how far drift can occur.
Have a good week!
