Dear Editor:
On Thurs., Feb. 26 I attended the Terrier Year End Banquet. Dave Baron, Don Chesney and Johann Roodt gave meaningful, thought-provoking speeches that put the year into perspective. The themes were inspirational to the players, their parents, billets and fans after a very difficult season.
During the “Greetings from the City” however, our Mayor, Mr. Maloney, made comments that were inaccurate, inappropriate and insulting to the players and their families of the “Gerry James” era.
If Mr. Maloney were to speak to any player of that time he would come to realize community service, dedication, loyalty and discipline were only a few of the philosophies upon which their team was built. These teams left their mark on this hockey club, this league and this community. It is a legacy of which they are very proud. There is no denying that Coach James was a “colourful” figure during his years in the SJHL. He and all his players provided an entertaining brand of hockey filling rinks all around the league with wildly passionate fans.
That, Mr. Maloney, is how the teams from the “Gerry James” era deserve to be remembered.
