Stackhouse Soapbox - Marijuana users election winners

So far the real winners of the federal election, as far as citizens are concerned, are those who enjoy marijuana.  Justin Trudeau says he plans to legalize the drug, sooner rather than later, as it was in his election platform.  Many are excited about this possibility, but the reality is that it won’t happen overnight.  It’s also expected to cost quite a bit to legislate it.  I see the Hell’s Angels are opposed to legalizing it.  Gee, wonder why.

The Globe and Mail is admitting they held on to a news story last Monday and waited until Wednesday to release it because of concerns it could be damaging to the federal Liberals on election day.  I recall going to journalism school and it was hammered home that the media’s job is to be impartial.  It appears as though that quality has been thrown out the window.  Some media outlets will, even, publicly announce which party it supports.  The reality is that many journalists are looking to quit the media and the best way to get out is to be hired by a politician as a communications official.  What better way to audition than by kissing the rear end of a new MP?

I will have to find new ways to get my laughs from people who like to blame Stephen Harper for all that is wrong in the world.  I read, on the weekend, how Harper’s lack of commitment to meaningful climate change laws resulted in a devastating hurricane in Mexico.  Don Rae, of Crusader Drilling, posted on social media there is a movement to have Calgary’s airport named after Harper.  While I can’t disagree with the logic behind the thinking on this, how long will it be before a plane has a mechanical failure on the runway and that becomes Harper’s fault too?

I experienced the new 80 km/h speed limit from Balgonie to Regina on Saturday and while I have to say it seemed like I was moving at a snail’s pace, the situation wasn’t helped by the fact that many vehicles blew by me as if I was standing still and there was no such thing as a new, slower speed limit.  Without exaggerating, I’d say about 30% of the traffic was doing 100 km/h or more.  This is easy pickings for law enforcement, yet I didn’t see a single police cruiser.  I get that they want that stretch of highway to be safer, but a slower speed limit that isn’t, strictly, enforced is only going to cause more accidents as you will folks driving as slow as 70 and as fast as 120.  That’s too wide a discrepancy no matter what the actual law is.

The Toronto Star posted a story about Willowdale being the newest, hottest real estate market in the Toronto area with prices fetching more than a million dollars for simple accommodations.  What goes unsaid in these articles are how foreign investors, artificially, drive the prices through the roof making it impossible for the average Canadian family to afford a home.  I’m not sure what the answer is, but maybe there needs to be some regulation and extra fees charged to wealthy investors who manipulate and contort the market.  Yet, I’m not sure that’s the answer either because these folks seem to have a bottomless pit of funds.  One thing I’d like to see is a limit on the number of people who can live in one dwelling house.  There is no need for 20-30 people to cram into a bungalow.  Some will mock me and say ‘oh First World problems’.  Well, I live in a First World country, so I’m not apologizing for that.

Major League Baseball has really found a way to screw up instant replay.  If you watched most of the Toronto Blue Jays’ playoff run you don’t need me to explain.  Somehow they can watch what actually happens and then decide their eyes are lying to them.  The same thing occurred in the NHL on Sunday when Connor McDavid appeared to score a tying goal against Los Angeles late in the third period on Sunday.  McDavid shot the puck into the goalie’s glove and the goalie’s glove was behind the goal line, but because you couldn’t see the actual puck over the goal line, it was ruled no-goal.  Sports people can’t understand why these videos aren’t enough to overturn a wrong call made by the official in live time.  I just look at our legal system.  It operates on much the same principal.  If it quacks like a duck, then it must be a dog.

Not a lot of noise on the ‘Jack Eichel will be better than Connor McDavid’ front.  I don’t know how so-called ‘hockey experts’ can even come close to making that claim anyway.  McDavid was the unanimous choice to go first overall in the NHL Draft in June.  How can Eichel be a better NHLer than him by the end of October in the same year?

Nice person mentions this week:  Tricia Korczak, Danika Zurbyk, Jeannette Haubrich, Ron Irvine, and Kristin Karcha.
