Jordan and Chastan are playwrights in Equinox's latest production

OUTLOOK - Next weekend the latest production from Outlook’s Equinox Theatre will open for audiences as the company brings ‘Real Close to Broadway!’ to the stage.

Written by Dan D’Amario, the comedy tells the story of the Midville Community Theatre and the efforts undertaken to raise funds and keep the theatre alive. To find their next big hit they hold a playwriting competition, hoping to find an undiscovered gem that will put the theatre on the map. Once the field is narrowed down, some of the playwrights come to town and this is where misunderstandings and misguided gestures create fun behind the scenes.

Cast as two of the playwrights are Jordan Davies and Chastan Sim.

Jordan loves being on stage. “If I could live on a stage, I would!”, he said. “If there was back-to-back plays I would do it all the time. It is so much fun to be different people.”

He has been in previous Equinox shows including ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘Five Alarm’ and is enjoying ‘Real Close to Broadway!’ where he gets to play Johnny, a writer from New York who comes into Midville brandishing a lot of confidence. “He’s a little bit full of himself,” Jordan said. “He’s got an ego."

He is having fun with the character and the show. “A theatre company, looking for a playing, needing money--it’s a very on the nose play,” he said with a smile.

Jordan’s competition at the playwriting festival comes in the form of a “nerdy playwright,” according to Chastan Sim who has been cast as Martin. “He’s a small-town boy who is very enthusiastic about playwriting and he’s happy to be involved.”

Chastan has been in other Equinox shows including ‘Seussified Christmas Carol’ and was glad to be involved in this show because he is back in the community for a short time. “I just reinserted myself into the community from college for the summer so I happened to be here for this time period,” he said. In the fall he will be doing an internship as he prepares to be a high school math and chemistry teacher. He encourages those who want a fun night out to come and see ‘Real Close to Broadway!’ “If you’re into humor it’s definitely the show to see. It’s got a lot of charm.”

The show runs May 26-28. Tickets at Outlook Printers.
