CRYSTAL LAKE — Crystal Lake Resort was transformed into a vibrant hub of activity from Aug. 1 to 3, as hundreds of people gathered to celebrate the 39th annual Fun in the Sun event.
This long-standing Crystal Lake tradition was once again planned and organized by the Crystal Lake Recreation Committee (originally initiated by Anita Desroche, former owner-operator of The Beach Place), and brought together residents and visitors for a weekend of fun, laughter and community spirit, said Shawn Krotenko of the Crystal Lake Recreation Committee.
Festivities kicked off Friday night with a free beach concert featuring The Kelly Brothers. The band entertained the crowd with upbeat cover songs, setting a lively tone for the weekend ahead. As the sun set, the Great Western Beer Gardens opened, offering a refreshing way for attendees to unwind, dance and socialize.
Saturday morning saw the excitement move to Johnny's Beach, where relay races tested participants' skills in swimming, running, kayaking, paddleboarding and biking. The flipper obstacle courses added an extra element of fun and challenge. Meanwhile, the farmers market buzzed with activity, featuring a variety of vendors selling everything from handmade jewellery and wooden crafts to baked goods and homegrown vegetables. Kids enjoyed the bouncers and Gerald Ignatiuk’s barrel rides.
Saturday also featured a range of team events, including beach volleyball, horseshoes, bocce ball, and the newly added and popular pickleball and corn hole. The Great Western Beer Gardens continued to provide refreshments throughout the day, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and friendly competition.
The weekend concluded with a Sunday morning brunch at the Crystal Lake Golf Course, providing a perfect opportunity for attendees to relax and reflect on the memorable weekend. The evening wrapped up with an outdoor movie night.
Shawn Krotenko, chair of the Crystal Lake Recreation Committee (CLRC), expressed gratitude and pride in the community's involvement.
"Our community's spirit shines brightest when we come together for fun and shared goals. By enjoying each other's company and working towards a common future, we build strong connections and create lasting memories. Here's to celebrating our unity, and we are looking forward to a bright and promising future together! The CLRC is so very thankful to all who attended and participated in every way to make this year's Fun in the Sun a huge success!" said Krotenko.
The 39th annual Fun in the Sun showcased the heart and soul of Crystal Lake, turning the organized hamlet into a bustling small town, if only for a weekend. The event's success is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the CLRC and the enthusiastic participation of the community.
“We look forward to the next few years as we continue to add to this event and gear up for one big party on its 40th anniversary in 2026,” said Krotenko.
