Canora RCMP: Children left in vehicles while parents drink

On July 18, the Canora RCMP investigated a report that three children were left inside a vehicle unattended for a few hours while their parents were inside the bar drinking.

CANORA — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 121 calls from July 17 to Aug. 7, some of which included:

  • nine 911 Act calls,
  • two abandoned vehicles,
  • five animal calls,
  • three assaults,
  • one assault with a weapon,
  • two being unlawfully in a dwelling,
  • one breach of peace,
  • one break and enter,
  • one criminal harassment,
  • one disturbing the peace,
  • one failure to comply with probation order,
  • three false alarms,
  • one Firearms Act call,
  • four frauds,
  • two harassing communications,
  • one Liquor Act call,
  • one lost and found,
  • six Mental Health Act calls,
  • 10 mischiefs,
  • one missing person,
  • one sexual assault,
  • five suspicious persons,
  • four thefts under $5,000,
  • three traffic collisions,
  • 35 traffic offenses,
  • two Trespass Act calls,
  • three uttering threats,
  • six wellbeing checks,
  • six prisoners, and
  • three Child, Youth and Family Services Act calls.

Neglected kids

On July 18, the Canora RCMP investigated a report that three children were left inside a vehicle unattended for a few hours while their parents were inside the bar drinking. Police have identified the children and the parents. The investigations is ongoing.

Drunk & loud

The Canora RCMP were dispatched to Good Spirit Provincial Park on July 18 for a report of an intoxicated male yelling at a female. Police attended a campsite and arrested a male for breach of peace. The male was held in custody and later released without charge.

Uninvited

The Canora RCMP investigated a report that male had walked into a residence uninvited in the RM of Sliding Hills on July 19. The same male had been reported days prior trespassing on the caller’s land. A 55-year-old male from Canora was charged with being unlawfully in a dwelling house. The male was released on conditions to abstain from contact and communication with the caller and to attend court.

Erratic driver

On July 20, the Canora RCMP were dispatched to an aggressive driving call on Highway 9 north of Canora. The caller reported a blue Mitsubishi vehicle had passed him at a high rate of speed multiple times and after every pass the vehicle would stop, and the occupants would get out and run in and out of passing traffic.

Police patrolled the area and located an empty case of Twisted Tea in the middle of Highway 47. Patrols continued down Highway 47 until a blue Mitsubishi was located driving on the service road in Norquay. Police stopped the vehicle and found the male driver to be impaired by alcohol. The male was arrested and later provided two breath samples to police which were 220mg% and 230mg%.

The male was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and driving while over 80mg%. The male’s drivers licence was suspended and the Mitsubishi vehicle was seized for 60 days.

Break-in and theft

The Canora RCMP investigated a report that a property in the RM of Hazel Dell was broken into on July 21. Various items were stolen including the power lines on the home.

Firearms found during assault arrest

The Canora RCMP were dispatched on July 21 to an assault call in Buchanan. The caller advised that a female had been assaulted and the male who assaulted her was driving around in a truck trying to find her.

Police located the male driving a Ford F-350 outside of Buchanan and initiated a traffic stop. During the traffic stop, the male was observed holding a long-barrelled firearm in the cab of the truck. Police conducted a high-risk arrest with the male who was ordered out the vehicle. The male complied and was arrested for assault without incident. A search of the truck revealed a prohibited carbine rifle with a modified prohibited magazine that contained 28 rounds of ammunition.

A 27-year-old male from Buchanan was charged with two counts of assault, assault while choking, uttering threats, unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, unsafe storage of a firearm, and possession of prohibited weapon with ammunition without a licence or registration. The male was held for court and released with conditions to have no contact with the victim, abstain from possessing a firearm, and to attend Canora Provincial Court on Aug. 7.

Wandering solitary toddler

On July 24, the Canora RCMP were dispatched to a report that a toddler was walking alone on Main Street in Canora. Police recognized the child and returned him to his mother who lived nearby. Yorkton Child and Family Services was contacted to assist with the investigation.

Lock your doors

The Canora RCMP were dispatched on July 30 to a report that a male walked into a Canora residence at 12:20 a.m. Although the male was known to the home occupants, the male was not invited. Police would like to remind the public that it is very important to lock doors at night. The investigation is ongoing.

Sexual assault

The Canora RCMP investigated a sexual assault that occurred in Canora on July 31. Police have issued a sexual assault warrant for the arrest of a 49-year-old male from Canora who has left the area. Police continue to investigate.
