YORKTON — A North America-first Community Threat Assessment and Support Protocol (CTASP) has landed in Yorkton and area.

Good Spirit School Division’s board of education discussed the program at its meeting on April 25.

CTASP is a team effort involving different groups working together to prevent violence and keep schools and communities safe.

Created with the help of J. Kevin Cameron, an expert in threat assessment and trauma response, the protocol aims to stop violence before it happens and support people who have experienced trauma.

First started in September 2013, the protocol has been updated to include the knowledge and skills of local community members. It focuses on working together to deal with potential violence, while also considering the impact of trauma and making sure everyone is treated fairly.

The Assessment of Risk to Others (ARTO), once called the Violence Threat Risk Assessment (VTRA), is a key part of the plan. It aims to talk about potential dangers in a way that's easier for non-experts to understand.

The plan involves different groups like schools, police, healthcare, and community services, working together. They meet regularly and train to handle potential problems effectively.

This joint effort involves both core members and community partners dedicated to fostering supportive environments and preventing violence. As the protocol continues to develop, additional community partners will be welcomed aboard, further enhancing the region's commitment to early intervention and violence prevention.
