YORKTON – The Kinsmen Lady Gridders are looking to expand their ranks as they invited young athletes to try football the evening of May 5 at Kinsmen Century Field.
Head coach Tyrell Maclean said the program welcomed all girls in grades 5 through 11 from the Yorkton area to give the sport a shot.
"Give it a try and hopefully come and sign up for the Lady Gridders in the fall," said Maclean in an interview with SaskToday.ca
The team runs a spring season designed as an introduction to the game, leading up to a more intense fall schedule.
Maclean said participation has been on the rise in recent years, thanks in large part to the strong football community in Yorkton.
"We're lucky in Yorkton. The football community is really strong, and so athletes have started to flock to us," said Maclean, adding, "our program continues to grow and get stronger and stronger."
The Lady Gridders have remained undefeated since 2022, a success Maclean attributes to a combination of factors, including strong player numbers and commitment.
"We have strong numbers. We have good commitment. A lot of the other programs have the numbers, but they can't keep players, it seems," said Maclean. "the teams that can keep players don't seem to have the numbers and we've got a good combination of both."
With support from Yorkton Minor Football and the local community, Maclean says the team continues to thrive. He also emphasized the importance of growing the program off the field.
"We're always looking for coaches. Looking for help," said Maclen, "Lady Gridders is a strong program. It's been strong for the past six years."
