Local Artist Show under new director at GDAG

Show features art from 35 local exhibitors.

YORKTON – The 2024 Local Artist Show is on now at the Godfrey Art Gallery until the end of June.

The show features wall pieces, paintings, photographs, sculptures and other mixed media from 35 local exhibitors.

The closing reception for the show is scheduled for June 29 with all of the artists expected to be in attendance.

"There is lots of awesome work here this year," said Doreen Girard, Artistic Director with the Godfrey Dean Art Gallery.

For Girard this will be their first Local Artist Show, having started with the GDAG in May.

"I'm hoping next year to encourage more people to bring things like video work. More mixed media kind of stuff," said Girard of the possibilities for next year's show.

Girard was previously located in Winnipeg where she was involved in various arts including new media, film and projection work but said her background is in music, having studied at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto.

And though Girard comes from a much larger centre, she said she's no stranger to small towns.

"I grew up in a much smaller town than Yorkton that was also agriculture based so it feels really familiar to me in that way," said Girard.
