YORKTON - The Junior hockey season has begun for 2025-26 as the Yorkton Terriers began preseason play Sunday.

The opponents at the Westland Insurance Arena were the Waywayseecappo Wolverines of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

The Wolverines may have had time on the bus to overcome, but they hit the ice ready as Dylan Prettie scored 4:32 into the game to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Broden Wotherspoon would respond for the home-side with a goal at 16:22.

Moving to the middle stanza the Manitoba visitors again inched ahead when Ryder Delaquis potted one at 16:02.

Liam Flett gave Waywayseecappo a 3-1 lead with a goal just 2:55 into the third stanza.

A goal by Taye Shukin at 5:35 put the Terriers back in the hunt at 3-2.

And then, with the goaltender pulled in favour of an extra attacker Logan Hynd scored at 19:32 to knot the contest 3-3 through 60-minutes of play, sending the game to overtime.

But the Manitoba contingent would head east happy after Russell Aitkenhead scored the game-winner for the Wolverines on a penalty shot 34-seconds into extra time.

The Wolverines split goaltending duties with DJ Mecas getting the first half of the contest and Grady Robert finishing the game.
