YORKTON - It was a day of a lifetime for Nick Fraser as he recently assumed the role of ‘Chief for a Day.”
The opportunity was made possible through a collaboration between Cote First Nation and Snowarama.
In a powerful show of unity, Chief George Cote donated a once-in-a-lifetime ‘Honourary Chief for a Day’ experience as part of the upcoming Cote First Nation Traditional Powwow & Gathering of Nations, which took place July 12-13.
The donation was part of the 2025 Snowarama silent auction, raising funds to support Camp Easter Seal, Summer Fun, and Adaptive Technology Services – three programs designed to enhance accessibility, joy and inclusion for individuals experiencing disabilities in Saskatchewan.
The day ended up being an opportunity for Fraser to experience a vibrant mix of traditional Powwow dancing, horse relay racing, rodeo events, and family sports.
“It was an absolutely amazing day that enriched our souls and hearts,” Gerry Ann Fraser told Yorkton This Week. “Nick will remember Chief George and Cote First Nation for the rest of his life. Snowarama was very fortunate to have Chief Cote donate such a memorable experience and Nick was so lucky to be the winning bidder to allow him the chance of a lifetime of being Chief for a Day.”
Chief Cote said he too enjoyed the day.
“It really opened up my eyes to how important children with disabilities are. It really brought a lot of joy into my life ... I think the community really enjoyed it too,” he told YTW. “... I’m going to make this an annual event.”
