YORKTON — Suncrest College, in partnership with First Nations University of Canada, will launch a new cohort of the Bachelor of Indigenous Education program this fall at its Yorkton campus, with a remote learning option available in Melfort.

The four-year degree program, open to all students, combines Indigenous content, land-based learning and in-classroom experience every semester. Graduates will be certified to teach at the elementary or secondary level in Sask.

Offering a remote option in Melfort is aimed at increasing access to the program for students in the province’s northeast, allowing them to study closer to home.

“We are proud to continue this important partnership with First Nations University of Canada,” said Teri Thompson, Suncrest College’s Vice-President of Academics and Learner Engagement.

“The Bachelor of Indigenous Education program not only prepares future educators for meaningful careers in the classroom, but also plays a vital role in promoting Indigenous knowledge, culture and reconciliation through education," said Thompson, adding that program graduates are now teaching in urban schools as well as in various First Nations communities across the province.

Suncrest says the program allows students to train locally while gaining qualifications to teach anywhere in Sask. It notes students benefit from smaller class sizes, personalized instruction and community connections through experiential and land-based learning.

Applications are open, with classes set to begin in Sept. 2025. More information is available on Suncrest's website or by contacting advisor Alisa Perkins at 306-786-2595.
