NORTH BATTLEFORD – A man from Little Pine First Nation who was charged with an attempted armed car-jacking has been given a six-month suspended sentence on a weapons charge.

Durrell Colten Bearsears’ charges of robbery, pointing a firearm, and possession of methamphetamine were withdrawn in North Battleford Provincial Court on April 18.

The charges stem from an incident on Highway 16 near Bresaylor in the R. M. of Paynton east of Lloydminster in August 2023.

Maidstone RCMP say that a driver of a vehicle was flagged down by a woman beside a parked vehicle that had its hazard lights on. Once he stopped his vehicle, a man jumped out of the ditch and pointed a firearm at him. The victim was able to escape and call police. There were no injuries.

RCMP Police Dog Services helped search the area for the suspects. Crystal Marie Semaganis and Bearsears were arrested and charged with robbery, pointing a firearm, and possession of methamphetamine. Bearsears was additionally charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

In February, Semaganis was sentenced to 182 days on a robbery charge, 45 days concurrent for failing to comply with a release order, and 45 days concurrent for failing to comply with a probation order. She was credited with 183 days for time served while on remand.

Charges of pointing a firearm and possession of methamphetamine were withdrawn.
