RCMP recovered eight stolen firearms and charged four people.

LA RONGE – Two individuals out of four who allegedly posed as stranded motorists and tried to rob passers-by who offered to help, are still in custody.

Evan Rain, 28, of Paul First Nation and Wayne McLeod, 22, of La Ronge were remanded in custody at their last court appearance. On April 3, the two, along with co-accused Taza Spyglass, 31, of North Battleford, and Cool Water Standinghorn, 21, of Moosomin First Nation are back in La Ronge Provincial Court to enter an election.

Rain, Spyglass, Standinghorn, and McLeod were arrested by La Ronge RCMP in December after police got a call about an attempted robbery on Highway 165. Police say that a group of people were driving on the highway when they saw an SUV in the ditch. A man waved them down for help and the group stopped. Two men then pointed a firearm at the passers-by and ordered them out of their vehicle. They didn’t get out and instead drove away. They weren’t injured.

RCMP responded immediately and patrolled the area. They found two of the accused walking on the highway and two more in a disabled SUV, which was in the ditch. Police found a gun safe in the SUV and eight firearms hidden nearby in the snow. Police say the safe and guns were reported as stolen the night prior from a home in La Ronge.

Rain is charged with robbery with face masked, sixteen counts of possession of a firearm while prohibited, and pointing a firearm, eight counts of possession of a firearm knowing it was obtained by the commission of an offence, possession of property obtained by the commission of an offence and mischief under $5,000.

McLeod is charged with robbery with face masked, eight counts of possession of a firearm knowing it was obtained by the commission of an offence, and possession of property obtained by the commission of an offence.

Standinghorn is charged with eight counts possession of a firearm knowing it was obtained by the commission of an offence, and two counts possession of property obtained by crime.

Spyglass is charged with eight counts possession of a firearm knowing it was obtained by crime, and possession of property obtained by crime.

The charges against the accused haven’t been tested in court.
