Break, enter and thefts on the rise in Regina

"Lock it up," say police.

REGINA – In the past two months, there have been a rash of break-ins across Regina, according to RPS.

From police statistics, between May 1 and June 27, there were 80 break and enters to homes, garages and sheds, with more than half of the buildings (55 per cent) unlocked, and the remainder were unsecured. In addition, 117 vehicles were broken into during the same time frame with a staggering 97 per cent of break-ins from unlocked vehicles. The rest were vehicles with windows open.

"Break, enter and thefts are on the rise throughout our city, and the Regina Police Service is urging residents to take extra care in locking their doors and securing their valuables," said RPS in a media release.

Losing property is at the low end of risk when it comes to these crimes, as police caution much more serious interactions can occur as well.

"A recent case reported to police involved a suspect gaining entry to a home through an unlocked door and assaulting the homeowners in the middle of the night," RPS said. "The suspect was arrested and charged with break, enter, and commit assault."
