Canine catches fleeing car thief

Police find sawed-off shotgun and ammunition on one suspect.

REGINA – What’s faster than a police dog? Not two car thieves apparently. Early on the morning of Dec. 12, police reported seeing what they described as a unique-looking yellow Kia Seltos that matched the description of a stolen vehicle reported earlier.

“It appeared the vehicle had been abandoned, but as a different canine unit approached, two male suspects exited the vehicle and started running,” said RPS in a media release. Despite several warnings to stop, the two men continued to run from police.

“The canine officer sent his dog to apprehend the driver and radioed a description of the second male suspect to other units,” RPS said. “The dog pursued the driver and detained him (making contact by bite) until the officer was able to successfully arrest the male.”

The second suspect was arrested while trying to catch a taxi.

“It’s alleged this individual was in possession of a sawed-off shotgun and shotgun ammunition,” RPS explained. “Both males face criminal charges as a result of the investigation.”

Punnichy-area resident James Elias Jeremiah Cyr, 20, faces charges of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 (vehicle); and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 (license plate).
