Court fines man for torching truck, attempted fraud

Accused took truck to a gravel pit and set it on fire, Court heard.

REGINA – Torching a vehicle then trying to make an insurance claim doesn’t work.

That was a lesson Kelly D. Yahnke, 45, learned in Regina Provincial Court this morning, pleading guilty to a charge of attempt to defraud.

The charge rose form an incident on Sept. 17, 2021 when Yahnke and another man take his truck to a gravel pit and set it on fire, something the Crown prosecutor called a “sophomoric attempt” while reading the facts of the matter. Yahnke then attempted to submit a claim to SGI on the now-destroyed vehicle.

He was fined $300 (plus a $90 Victim Fine Surcharge) and a 12-month probation order.
