REGINA – The John Howard Society of Saskatchewan (JHSS) is offering free Record Suspension Services to all Saskatchewan residents.

Trained caseworkers offer support and guidance to people with eligible criminal records. Angel Genereux is one such Record Suspension Caseworker in Regina and surrounding area. She went through the record suspension process and knows too well the barriers faced by those living with a criminal record, and the positive impact a record suspension can have in someone’s life.

“Getting my record suspension has allowed me to pursue opportunities in my chosen field and not have to face the stigma of explaining myself to others for volunteer positions,” she said. “It's a really great feeling seeing that blank page the first time you request a criminal record check after having your record suspended.”

Before getting her record suspension, Genereux said she avoided applying for jobs that required a criminal record check, which severely limited her opportunities.

Shawn Fraser, CEO for JHSS said criminal records are more common that people imagine with many people from all walks of life having a current criminal record.

“It impacts everything from employment to housing to travel,” he said.

“People deserve a chance to move forward in life. When someone’s debt to society has been repaid, they should have an opportunity to move forward in life.”

JHSS has offices in Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, and Moose Jaw. The program is open to all residents in Saskatchewan.

You can contact the Record Suspension Services program Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. To learn more about the JHSS’s Record Suspension Services program go to John Howard Society's website.
