Man dies in RPS custody

SIRT investigating, police say.

REGINA – A man has died while being held at the RPS Detention Unit.

Paramedics were called to the unit just before 4 a.m. on Aug. 22 after officers reported a man suffering from "an apparent medical emergency inside his cell."

"EMS transported the male to hospital where he later passed away," said RPS in a media release.

The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team is currently investigating the death.

"As this is now under investigation by SIRT, RPS will not be providing further comment on the matter," RPS said.
SIRT is an independent, civilian-led unit responsible for investigating serious incidents involving police officers in the province.
