Regina police dog nabs New Year's car thief

Suspect drove away from police, thwarted by snowbank.

REGINA – Run from the cops, risk getting the chomp. That’s what one car thief discovered while ringing in the New Year, after leading police on a car chase that began in the 1200 block of Garnet Street.

“The vehicle was occupied and running and when police activated emergency lights and attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped away,” RPS said. “The stolen vehicle missed a turn and ended up in a snowbank.”

The driver then decided to flee on foot, but was apprehended by a Canine team after choosing to ignore warnings to stop.

“The suspect driver was taken to hospital for treatment of a dog bite,” said RPS, noting the registered owner of the vehicle was advised that his vehicle had been recovered.

Further police investigation led to charges against Troy Cardinal, 23, of Regina, who was also the subject of several warrants. Cardinal was charged with operation of a conveyance dangerous to the public; flight from a police officer; possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000; possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000; and breach of a peace order.

Cardinal made an initial court appearance on Jan. 3 in relation to these charges.
