Missing man's remains found in burned out house in Battleford

Gregory Cope's family say they are "heartbroken" that he has been found deceased. RCMP are investigating his death as a homicide.

BATTLEFORD – The body of a missing man was found Feb. 27 inside a house destroyed by fire Feb. 18 and his death is being investigated as a homicide.

RCMP say that the remains of 32-year-old Gregory Cope were found in the debris on 27th Street West in Battleford and their initial investigation has indicated that he was murdered.

RCMP Major Crimes is investigating with the assistance of Saskatchewan RCMP’s Forensic Identification Services and fire investigators with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency. 

Cope was reported as missing to Battlefords RCMP on Feb. 21.

Cope's family say they are "heartbroken" that he has been found deceased and have asked for privacy as they "process this tragic loss."

Cope's family said their thoughts are with his two sons and a Gofundme has been set up for the boys. 

A memorial page has been created to honour Cope and for his friends and family to share photos and memories. Kaja Holtz said that Cope was an active member of the community in Battleford and North Battleford. He attended Battleford Central School [elementary] and North Battleford Comprehensive High School. 

"Greg was best known for his jokes, adventures and heroism towards other," said Kaja Holtz. "Let's not let his memory go unnoticed."
