On July 12, 2003, Saskatoon police got a report of a break-and-enter in the 200 block of Avenue K North. When police arrived, they found McCoy suffering from serious injuries.
He died the following day and his death was ruled a homicide.
Police say the break-in occurred between 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 10 and 8 a.m. Saturday July 12.
Police believe some property was stolen from McCoy’s home. A starter pistol was located at the scene.
Investigators learned that three suspicious individuals were seen in the area between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2003.
One was described as an Indigenous male about 16 years old, approximately 5-foot-8 with a medium build and collar length dark hair. He was wearing a black football style jersey with white numbers or writing on it, black pants and wire rim sunglasses with smaller style lenses.
Two other individuals were described as males and somewhat shorter. Police say they don’t have additional descriptions for those two people.
