NORTH BATTLEFORD – A driver was clocked going 101 km/hr in a 50 km/hr zone and two other drivers were registered going 138 km/hr in an 80 km/hr zone as they raced across a bridge.
The first incident was on Pēyak Trail on June 20 and the driver was fined $809. In the second incident on June 21, both drivers were still considered part of the province’s graduated driver license program and were each fined $888 and had their vehicles impounded for seven days.
North Battleford Community Safety Officer Unit Commander Jerry Koliniak reminds the public that excessive speeding not only has harsh financial impacts with fines and additional insurance costs, but is extremely dangerous, particularly in cases where speeds are registered at more than 50 km/h above the posted speed limits.
“Speed limits are established and posted clearly to protect the safety of not only vehicle operators and their passengers but for pedestrians and other motorists,” said Koliniak in a prepared statement.
“It is extremely difficult to maintain proper care and control of a vehicle at those speeds. Incidents that occur when someone is traveling at excessive speeds like we have seen recently in North Battleford can be traffic, fatal, and are one hundred per cent preventable.”
