Woman accused of aiding alleged killer faces separate weapons charge

A day before Jessica Caron’s murder, Crystal Lafond had appearances scheduled in Saskatoon court on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and theft over $5,000.

SASKATOON – A woman accused of helping 43-year-old Derek Thomas Caron escape after he allegedly killed 44-year-old Jessica Caron also faces weapons and theft charges in other incidents.

A day before Jessica Caron’s death, Crystal Rose Lafond, 37, had appearances scheduled in Saskatoon Provincial on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, theft over $5,000, and failing to appear in court.

Lafond, and Derek Caron, were arrested on Feb. 7 after police found a woman’s body off of 11th Street west of Saskatoon a few kilometres from Highway 7. Saskatoon Police say they went to the area around 4 a.m. on Feb. 7 after getting a call about suspicious activity. They cordoned off Range Road 3062 and restricted access to the area while they investigated the death they called suspicious. Hours later they said they were investigating it as a homicide.

Court documents show that Jessica Caron was killed on Feb. 1. Derek Caron’s Facebook page says he and Jessica Caron were married. Court documents show that he lived on Avenue S South in Saskatoon.

On Feb. 8, Judge Marilyn Penner remanded Lafond in custody and adjourned her matter to Feb. 13 to give her time to apply for legal aid. Judge Penner also ordered that she have no communication with Derek Caron and a third woman.

Derek Caron is charged with second-degree murder and Judge Penner also remanded him in custody after his appearance Feb. 8. His matter was adjourned to Feb. 16 to give him time to apply for legal aid. He was also ordered not to have any contact with Crystal Lafond and the same third woman as Lafond.

The charges against Caron and Lafond haven't been tested in court.
