Here are a few tips for first-time voters.
To vote in a Saskatchewan provincial election or by-election you must be:
• A Canadian citizen;
• At least 18 years old;
• A Saskatchewan resident for at least the last six months.
You can also vote if you are a British subject who was qualified as a voter on June 23, 1971
you meet the residency requirements stated above.
Special Eligibility Rules for Saskatchewan Voters
You need ID to vote.
Before you are handed a ballot at a voting place, you must show the election worker ID that confirms your name and address. If that sounds like a problem, vouching may be an option.
Option 1. Driver’s licence. It has your name and address and is all you need.
Option 2. Two pieces of ID. Both must show your name and at least one must show your current address. Fifty options include birth certificates, credit and debit cards and a wide variety of other documents. Visit: https://www.elections.sk.ca/voters/voter-id-requirements/ for details.
Option 3. Vouching. If you do not have any ID, another voter can vouch for you. An eligible voter, who knows you and lives in the same constituency as you, may vouch for you at the voting place when you arrive to vote in person.
The deadline for mail-in ballots was Oct. 19. In-person voting takes place during Voting Week Oct. 22 to 28.
Here is what happens when you vote inside a voting place during a provincial election:
• An election worker will ask to see ID that proves your name and address. If you do not have ID, vouching may be an option.
• Take the folded ballot you are given and go behind the voting screen for privacy.
• You will be handed one folded ballot.
• Go behind the voting privacy screen. Mark an X next to the name of one candidate.
• Re-fold your ballot. Keep your choice secret. No one can ask to see who you voted for.
• An election worker will show you the box to drop or insert your ballot.
