REC REPORT

Fall weather has arrived, bringing with it the urge to curl up on the couch and watch all the new episodes of our favorite TV shows.

Fall weather has arrived, bringing with it the urge to curl up on the couch and watch all the new episodes of our favorite TV shows. It’s important, though, to remember that just for healthy maintenance adults aged 18-64 years should accumulate at minimum of 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity per week, in bouts of 10 minutes or more. Moderate-intensity activities like brisk walking or riding a bike will cause adults to sweat a little and breathe harder. Vigorous-intensity activities like running or cross country skiing will cause adults to sweat and be “out of breath”. Being active for at least 150 minutes a week can help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, certain types of cancer, Type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, overweight and obesity. It’s safe to say that more physical activity provides greater health benefits.

Kipling will soon be home to a new fitness centre – Bullet Proof Fitness, situated in the former Kipling Industries building on Highway 48. The fitness centre will be accessible through monthly memberships, with a target opening date in October 2017. For complete information on Bullet Proof Fitness, contact Matt at (306) 434-9800.

Older Adult Fitness Classes have resumed for the fall on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. in the Kipling Friendship Centre. Classes are 50 minutes in length and open to all interested participants. Classes feature light cardio activity, strength training and balance and flexibility exercises – all set to great music! There is no charge to attend – everyone welcome!

Hats off to Kipling Minor Ball and the volunteers that assisted with removing the former fence on a couple of diamonds and sprucing up the poles with a fresh coat of paint! Their plans are to hang the new fence in early spring to have those diamonds ready for play next season.

Kipling & District Arts Council’s season will begin on November 28 with the Derina Harvey Band, an Edmonton based Celtic Rock ensemble who entertains with a show that is engaging, energetic and fun! Season tickets, as well as tickets for just the November 28 show, can be purchased from Balfour Drugs or by calling Mona Lynn Stender at (306) 736-2263.

The Dale Blackstock Memorial Rec Hockey Tournament is scheduled for November 10 & 11, 2017 at the Kipling Arena. To register a team, please call the Rec Office at (306) 736-8440 or Jeff Balogh at (306) 224-4393.

Although the summer has come to an end, the Kipling Campground remains open until October 15. Please call the Rec Office (306) 736-8440 to reserve a site. The Town of Kipling currently has a fire ban in effect, so there will not be firewood available to campers. Residents are welcome to store their campers in the Kipling Campground during the off-season at no charge, beginning October 16. Residents are required, however, to call the Rec Office (306) 736-8440 to register their RV.

Our community was recently saddened with the loss a couple of valued volunteers – Gordon Toppings and Willy Rapp - who were involved in many community organizations and activities over their lifetimes. Thank you, gentlemen, for the dedication and commitment you gave to the community of Kipling.

As we approach Thanksgiving 2017, Kipling & District Parks and Recreation wishes to acknowledge all of the volunteers that make sport, culture and recreation a priority in the community. For all of you, we are truly thankful!
