REGINA - Regina Northeast MLA Gary Grewal has announced he is not seeking reelection.

In a statement Friday afternoon, he confirmed the news, saying he looks forward to spending more time with his family.

“It has been an honour to serve the people of Regina Northeast for the past four years as a member of Premier Scott Moe’s Saskatchewan Party government,” Grewal said in a news release.

Grewal, who was in his first term, had been under heavy fire from the Opposition over the past few months in connection to controversy surrounding Sunrise Motel, which Grewal owns. The motel, and by extension Grewal, had been accused by the NDP of overbilling the Social Services ministry for client stays at that venue. In the wake of that controversy, Social Services Minister Gene Makowsky recently announced changes to the way Social Services will procure hotel rates.

The news that Grewal is not running again comes soon after word that Rahul Singh was seeking the Saskatchewan Party nomination in Regina Northeast. That nomination meeting is scheduled for mid-March.

With this latest announcement, it brings to 15 the number of current Saskatchewan Party MLAs who are either not seeking re-election, were defeated for renomination, or stripped of their nomination to run again for the party.
