PRINCE ALBERT —  A woman entered a plea of guilty for a fire that burned down a community centre on urban reserve land in the city of Prince Albert.

Gina Pearl Beatty, 25, was charged with one count of arson for starting a fire that destroyed the Senator Allen Bird Memorial Centre April 15, 2022.

The centre was located on Chief Joseph Custer Reserve 201 across the street from the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert.

The centre was operated by Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) and used for events such as music festivals, sports, band elections, fur sales, powwows and funerals.

Beatty’s lawyer, Gordon Kirkby says the judge approved the use of a sentencing circle to determine the appropriate consequence for the crime of arson.

Beatty will remain in custody until the sentencing July 7, 1:30 p.m. at Prince Albert Provincial Court.
