REGINA – The Saskatchewan Progress Party has announced that Nov. 18 is the date when the party will select a new leader.

The party has commenced a leadership race to replace Jeff Walters, who resigned on September 29 as leader of the party.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to serve in this role, and I am deeply grateful for the trust and support that you have shown me,” Walters said in a news release on social media.

“Over the past two years of my tenure, our party has worked tirelessly to advocate for the values and principles that we hold dear. We have made significant strides in promoting accountability and compassion for government, and I am proud of what we have accomplished together.

“However as we stand on the threshold of a new election, I believe it is essential for our party to fully embrace, change and renewal. It is time for a fresh perspective, new leadership, and innovative ideas that will resonate with the electorate and propel our party to new heights.”

The Saskatchewan Progress Party is the party formerly known as the Saskatchewan Liberal Party. The party changed its name in July following a vote of party members, who overwhelmingly supported the name change.

The new leader will be chosen by a direct vote of party members in a ranked ballot process. The leadership convention will be held online, followed by a policy convention the next day, Nov. 19.

The deadline for nominations in the leadership race is Nov. 1 at 5 p.m. and as part of the process, all leadership candidates must raise $3,500.00 in non-refundable donations to the party by Nov. 10. All members in good standing as of Nov. 8 will be eligible to vote.
