OpenAI is getting ready to launch "Strawberry," its latest AI model (previously known as Q*). This new model is said to possess capabilities far beyond current AI, including solving novel math problems, developing marketing strategies, and even tackling complex word puzzles. (We'll have to wait and see if the new model knows how many times the letter "r" appears in "strawberry.")
Strawberry's potential is highlighted by claims that it scores over 90% on the MATH benchmark, significantly outperforming existing models like GPT-4. However, its development hasn't been without controversy.
If you remember, Q* was at the center of last year's brief leadership crisis at OpenAI, with concerns raised about its potential risks and progress toward artificial general intelligence (AGI). While the advanced capabilities of Strawberry are exciting, they also amplify discussions about AI safety and the need for responsible development as we approach AGI.
The rumor mill says OpenAI will release Strawberry sometime this fall. In practice, they have to. Meta's Llama is free to use (and very powerful). Anthropic's Claude is not free, but they are making reasonable deals. There are a bunch of models (LLMs and SLMs) that are making the space more competitive. It's time for OpenAI to make a bold move.
