Ahead of their game Tuesday night, the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings announced they had traded a fourth-round pick and a PDF to the Estevan Bruins in exchange for Nikolas Sombrowski, who is a ’01-born forward from Fernie, B.C. The majority of his 2018/19 season was played with the Fernie Ghostriders in the KIJHL and he finished 40-15-18-33. He did play up seven games in the BCHL for the Salmon Arm Silverbacks and had four points with one goal. Before coming to the Wings, Sombrowski played one game with the Bruins in the 2019/20 season.

Tuesday night’s game was in Wilcox against the Notre Dame Hounds. Hiltz scored early on in the first with assistance from Skinner. The score remained 1-0 until late in the second when the Hounds tied up the game.

The third period was a messy one, with quite a few nasty hits and roughing penalties by both teams. The Hounds also outshot the Wings 17-8, explaining why they were able to pull themselves ahead and make it 3-1 by 8:51 in the period.

In a desperate attempt to even the score, the Wings pulled Aaron de Kok to give themselves an extra man. Sombrowski received the puck from Nolan Steer along the boards on the right hand side of the Hounds net. Sombrowski then deked out two Hounds defenders at the net and snuck the puck under the goaltender’s skate. With less than a minute left in the period, the Wings were unable to send the game into overtime and they fell 3-2.

Beforehand, Red Wings played home home games on Friday, Sept. 27 and Saturday, Sept.28 against the Yorkton Terriers and the Melville Millionaires.

A battle in front of the Terriers net resulted in Jacob Piller chipping a rebounded puck into the netting at 9:05 in the first period on the power play.

The Terriers tied it up in the second period, and just over two minutes into the third period, Keigan Callander lifted one up and over the goaltender’s shoulder from behind the net.

In an attempt to even the score, the Terriers pulled their goalie, but the wide-open net allowed Tyson McLean to shoot the puck past three Terriers players and the goal line.

Noah Decottignies spent the full 60 minutes in net and stopped 32 of the 33 shots taken at him.

The following night the Red Wings hosted the Melville Millionaires for an on-the-edge-of-your-seat kind of game. The game started off shaky for the Wings as the Millionaires were already ahead 2-0 just over 11 minutes into the first.

With assistance from Braden Birnie and Piller, McLean was able to get the Wings on the board. On the power play and with just 40 seconds left in the period, Jevon Schwean tied up the game with assistance from Graham Skinner and Piller.

In the second period at 18:51 on the power play Connor Karo scored his first goal as a Red Wing and made the score 3-2.

The Millionaires were able to tie up the game and move ahead by one in the third, but Christian Snyder responded and made it 4-4 which ultimately sent the game into overtime. A line of three Wings veterans, Ben Hiltz, Piller and Schwean, took to the ice in overtime and with just 30 seconds left in overtime; Hiltz became the hero of the game scoring the game winning goal.
