BATTLEFORD — The Fred Light Museum in Battleford will soon be acquiring a wheelchair-accessible ramp at the front of the building to welcome visitors.

Battleford town council approved the unbudgeted project at an estimated cost of $15,000 at its recent meeting.

Parks and Recreation Manager Jordan Schechtel said in his report the town will be able to use savings from other capital projects to cover the cost.

Local contractor Jason Russell Construction, who submitted the lowest of three bids, offered to donate the labour portion of the project, meaning the town would only be responsible for the cost of materials.

Material costs were previously estimated at $12,030, although prices may have increased since that estimate was received.

Coun. Kevin Russell left council chambers during the discussion due to a conflict of interest.

The town previously installed a chair lift inside the museum with support from a $54,000 donation from a local family. The lift enables people with disabilities to access all areas of the museum. The outside ramp is needed to allow access to the interior of the building.

Schechtel said the initial donation of the lift and the offer to donate labour for the ramp “clearly demonstrate an engaged community actively contributing to local initiatives,” which aligns with the town’s strategic plan.

“The installation of the wheelchair ramp, in conjunction with the new chair lift, will make the Fred Light Museum fully accessible to visitors with disabilities. This directly enhances the quality of life for all residents and visitors by ensuring inclusive access to this culturally important facility,” he said.

Because of the late construction season, the project may not be completed until 2026.

Coun. Doug Laing welcomed the decision.

“This is awesome,” he said. “I’m very happy that he offered to donate his time. He’s a nice fellow. Hopefully, this all goes through this fall because the chair [lift] is already there.”
