THE BATTLEFORDS — April 3 to 7 marked a significant milestone for the John Paul II Collegiate Cheer Team as they embarked on an exciting journey to Vancouver to participate in the prestigious Sea to Sky International Cheer Competition. Their hard work and dedication paid off, as they earned a silver medal in the Scholastic Senior High Intermediate Division.

The last time the team ventured to Vancouver was back in 2016, making this return a highly anticipated event. Reflecting on the team's journey, Rena Fauchon, advisor for the John Paul II Collegiate Cheer Team, expressed her enthusiasm by stating, “They had a successful year this year; we ended the year on a high note!”

In addition to their performance in Vancouver, the JPII Cheer Team collected several impressive accolades throughout the year as well.

Starting off with the Battle of the Border competition held in Lloydminster in December, they clinched a first-place victory.

During the Winter Knockout competition in Warman, they once again seized first place.

Their participation in the Best of the West competition in Moose Jaw also yielded commendable results, with the team finishing in fourth place.

Then at the Warman Cheer Classic, they did not just achieve first place but were also recognized as the top school among 24 represented high schools, further solidifying their reputation as a formidable force in the cheerleading community.

This performance at the Sea to Sky International Cheer Competition served as the crowning achievement of a successful year for the JPII Cheer Team. Their journey exemplifies the power of hard work, perseverance, and camaraderie, setting a high bar for future endeavors. Looking ahead, the prospects appear promising, as Fauchon highlighted their ambitions for the future: “We’re looking at maybe in the future going to the high school Nationals in Ottawa.”

Aside from the accolades and competitions, the JPII Cheer Team has fostered a vibrant community of support and enthusiasm among athletes and parents alike. One parent expressed their appreciation by proclaiming, “It’s high energy and lots of fun; the kids are taught everything to compete. It’s an underrated sport, and the coaches are amazing.”

One of the cheerleaders shared her experience: “Cheer is so much fun! I had so much fun going to competitions, learning new things, and meeting new friends.”
