THE BATTLEFORDS -  The Battlefords Union Hospital (BUH) Foundation is $50,000 closer to their $916,000 goal in their 'Medication Matters,' capital campaign to purchase new Pyxis MedStations, as Nov. 27 marked a hefty donation from the Kinsmen TeleMiracle Foundation

“Thanks to the generosity of TeleMiracle donors, we are honoured to enable the purchase of this vital equipment that will help improve the quality of healthcare for residents of the Battlefords area,” Raelynn Nicholson, chair of the Kinsmen Foundation board said in a statement released Monday afternoon.

“This gift shows how TeleMiracle proceeds are helping people every day, right here at home in Saskatchewan.”

The 'Medication Matters' capital campaign was announced in March 2023  and is the largest capital campaign to date for the foundation.

“Thank you to Kinsmen TeleMiracle Foundation for supporting new, up-to-date medical equipment in the Battlefords. Anyone from Saskatchewan knows the hard work TeleMiracle does fundraising each and every year to help the people of Saskatchewan and improve the quality of life for Saskatchewan residents," Cheryl Mitchell,  BUH Foundation board chair said.

"We are honoured to receive this donation and be a part of this work as we provide enriched healthcare for people within the Battlefords and surrounding communities,” she added.

Pyxis MedStations are automated medication-dispensing units that help improve the efficiency, effectiveness and safety of medication delivery to patients. The new technology will allow for improved safety and controlled access to medications at BUH, with built-in medication and timing alerts.

"Efficiencies will be gained as medication requests are submitted to Pharmacy and approved for delivery through Pyxis, reducing wait times between requests and administration to patients," reads the statement, noting that it will also allow staff to spent more time at patients' bedside.

Departments at BUH set to receive the new system include,

  • Emergency Department,
  • Medical & Surgical wards,
  • Palliative Care,
  • Women’s Health & Birthing Centre,
  • Chemotherapy,
  • and Battlefords Mental Health Centre among others.

Implementation of Pyxis MedStations for each department will be completed in two phases, projected to begin in 2024.

"We are just so extremely grateful for Kinsmen TeleMiracle for this grant donation that we've received ... this kind of donation will have a significant impact on the campaign itself," Leanne Ducommun, executive director for the BUH Foundation said.
