LLOYDMINSTER – The Lloydminster RCMP, along with Maidstone detachment, have launched an investigation into a series of incidents involving counterfeit Canadian currency being circulated at local businesses.

Since mid-August, police have confirmed at least seven separate reports of fake bills being successfully passed within the city. The forgeries have primarily targeted larger denominations, with counterfeit $50 and $100 notes being used.

“Counterfeit money directly impacts businesses and the community as a whole,” says Lloydminster RCMP Sgt. Christopher Byford. “We encourage vigilance and reporting to help us stop the circulation of these bills.”

Local businesses are encouraged to carefully inspect $50 and $100 bills before accepting them. The Bank of Canada provides resources and training material on how to verify security features on Canadian currency.

And in response to the ongoing investigation, police are now seeking the public’s help in identifying one or more suspects believed to be responsible for distributing the phony money.

If you have information regarding this investigation, please contact Lloydminster RCMP at 780-808-8400. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online at www.p3tips.com
