NORTHERN SASKATCHEWAN – The most pressing fire in the province is the Muskeg fire near Beauval, said Steve Roberts from the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) on Friday.
Due to the immediate threat, Beauval was fully evacuated Thursday afternoon, displacing approximately 560 residents.
“Currently that fire is 95,000 hectares,” he said. “Late yesterday evening, the fire was pushed by the wind and moved south. It came to the north edge of the town then proceeded down the west side and to the southern part of the town.”
Strong winds Thursday pushed the flames near the town, but despite the close call, fire crews and aircraft successfully prevented major structural damage, with only a shed and a vehicle near the northern ball diamonds lost.
Evacuees are being supported by emergency agencies or staying with family and friends in Saskatoon and Moose Jaw.
Roberts said there are 57 active fires with 14 not contained. So far this year, 364 wildfires have been recorded, far exceeding the fire-year average of 232.
Saskatchewan Minister of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety, Tim McLeod praised the work of the frontline workers who are working to protect lives and property.
“This is a deeply distressing time for many families, and I want to acknowledge the fear and disruption that many people are experiencing,” he said.
With hazardous dry conditions fuelling the wildfires, the province has imposed a complete fire ban.
