Clara SchindelFebruary 18, 1912 - May 31, 2011The death of Clara (nee Mayert) Schindel of Quill Plains Centennial Lodge, Watson, (and formerly of LeRoy), occurred at her residence on Tuesday, May 31, 2011. She was 99 years of age. Clara was born on February 18, 1912, to Charles and Amelia (nee Klein) Mayert at home on the family farm south of LeRoy. She grew up there and attended Spring Grove Country School. On May 7, 1931, Clara married Henry Schindel. Five children, three daughters and two sons, were born to them. After Clara and Henry parted ways, Clara worked as a cook in LeRoy Hospital for many years, where her meals were prized for their taste and quality. In the 1960s, she moved to Tsawwassen, BC, and was both Nanny and housekeeper for her daughter Florence and her two children. Upon retirement, Clara relocated to Delta, BC, and lived there until moving to Calgary, AB, and then to LaRonge, SK. Eventually, she returned to her "home territory", LeRoy, and resided at Evergreen Country Home. When failing health necessitated more care, a final move was made to Quill Plains Centennial Lodge in Watson. Over the years, Clara was involved with various senior groups, including the O'Keefe Seniors in Delta and one in LaRonge, often volunteering in their gift shops. Her hobbies included sewing, knitting, crocheting, crafting, needlework and Bingo. Clara made afghans and/or quilts for all her family members until her eyesight and arthritis prevented her from doing so. In addition, her baking and cooking were immensely enjoyed by family and friends alike. She complained very little and always had a smile. Clara will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her four children, 11 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and a few great-great-grandchildren: Florence Weisser and Laurence (D'Arcy) Schindel, all of British Columbia; Edna Cole (Allan Lissel) of Alberta; and Dorothy (Mansel) Hewison of Saskatchewan; daughter-in-law, Carolynn Schindel of British Columbia; one brother, John Mayert of Regina, SK; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her estranged husband, Henry Schindel; son, Leonard Schindel; two grandsons: Laurence Schindel in infancy and Morley Hewison; parents, Charles and Amelia (nee Klein) Mayert; two brothers: Albert Mayert and Sam Mayert; and by three sisters: Ida Lem, Elsie Merritt and Emma Braitenbach. The Funeral Service for Clara was held at Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, on Saturday, June 4, 2011, at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Al Hingley. The song Beyond the Sunset provided music ministry. Honorary pallbearers were "all those who shared in Clara's life." Active pallbearers were selected from those present at the funeral. Interment followed at LeRoy Public Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to the Quill Plains Centennial Lodge Heritage Garden Fund. SCHULER-LEFEBVRE, Humboldt, SK.
