The death of Mr. Edward "Ed" Julius Menz, Sr. of Muenster occurred at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon, on Sunday, June 20, 2010. He was 94 years of age. Ed was born on August 14, 1915, to Edward Johann and Anna (nee Flugel) Menz at Jacobowa, Germany. In 1928, at the age of 12, he immigrated to Canada with four siblings. They settled in the Muenster district where Ed's brother Anton and brother-in-law Joe Strome had arrived two years prior. Ed had started school in Germany, then continued his education at Ives Rural School in the Muenster district. Following his education, he left home to work in the gold mines in Ontario and Manitoba. On October 13, 1943, Ed married the love of his life, Clara Vogelsang, in Muenster. Seven children, five daughters and two sons, were born to them. Initially, Ed and Clara lived and farmed north of Muenster. After about five years, they moved into Muenster where Ed worked at the locker plant. In 1950, Ed and Clara purchased the Barker farm where they resided until 1980, when they retired into a house they bought in Muenster. A final move was made into Wolverine Heights in 2007, their home until the present. Over the years, Ed pursued a variety of hobbies and interests. As a talented woodworker, he made picture frames, lamps, along with many other items, and enjoyed refinishing antique furniture. Ed also collected antiques, coins and belt buckles. He was not one to be idle, and spent many hours adjusting or repairing various items in his shop. Ed was also known for his great sense of humor and his love of practical jokes. Family and friends were of utmost importance to Ed. He traveled back to the land of his roots four times. At home, he loved nothing more than family gatherings when his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were all together.
