Eunice was born to (Thomas) William and Helen (Hickey) Buckton on November 12, 1923 in Medicine Hat, Alberta. She grew up in Tompkins, Sask. District and left the dried out prairies with her family to Pleasantdale/LacVert area the fall of 1938. Following her school days, she worked as a hired girl for area farms and in rural Regina and Saskatoon. On November 4, 1950 she married William Adolph Weseen. They farmed in the Lewis Lake District for 42 years and raised a family of five: Gayle, Wade, Mark, Ross and Kathy. Never a stranger to hard work, she helped on the farm and shoveled grain before bin sweeps and grain bags were invented! She hauled meals to the field for over 50 years and raised chickens, milked cows, and planted a large garden. She was a lifetime member of the Lewis Lake Ladies Club. She was a great cook, could sew, knit and crochet. Each grandchild received an afghan for their graduation. Her grandchildren devoured her homemade bread and buns before they could cool. Christmas dinner was not complete without her signature Christmas pudding and white sauce. The tweaks to her celery relish recipe were a trade secret. She loved her hair color and its accompanying character traits. She perpetuated the stereotype of the feisty red head. She guarded her independence and loved the freedom her little car offered. She cherished the arrival of each grandchild and great-grandchild and remembered their birthdays and attended many special events in their lives. Not one to heap praise, they always knew she was proud of their achievements. She fondly remembered trips with Aunty Dot to B.C. and Nova Scotia, and her trip to Australia in 1999. She moved from the farm to Naicam for 9 years and lived in Diefenbaker Place in Melfort for the last 10 years. She was in charge of her affairs and maintained a sharp wit and sense of humor to the end. She passed away peacefully at Melfort Hospital on April 26, 2011 at the age of 87. Eunice was predeceased by an infant son, Dale (1952); her father, Will Buckton (1968); son-in-law David Smadu (1991); sister-in-law Sheila Buckton (1991); husband Bill Weseen (1992); Brothers Ernie Buckton (1995) and Don Buckton (2000), and mother, Helen Buckton (1997). She leaves to mourn her family: Gayle Smadu of Regina, and sons Delmar (Jolleen), and Emily, Blair (Barbara), Elizabeth and Samuel; Wade (Valerie) of Lake Lenore, daughters, Jasmine (Kevin) Brawn, Anaka and William, and Jillian; Mark of Naicam, Michael (Mandy) and Lukas, Natalie, and Darcy (Lynsi) and their mother, Sandra Weseen (Bob McPherson); Ross (Catherine) of Unity, Chad and daughter Kalley, Ashley (Brent) Pool and Aidyn, and Autumn; Kathy Weseen of Prince Albert, Amber, Heather and Leah, and their father Dale Kosowan; two sisters-in-law Doris Rolles and Evelyn Buckton, as well as many nieces and nephews. Granddaughter, Jasmine Brawn, who flew home for Grandma's funeral from Abu Dhabi, UAE, wrote to Grandma from Cairo in 2008 as she prepared to run her first marathon in Edinburgh, Joints In Motion, for arthritis. "I hope you know that you are a big part of why I decided to run this marathon in Scotland. When I think about the obstacles you've overcome in life and the ease with which you seem to take life, I know that if I had half as much will, work ethic, stubbornness and endurance as you do, I can pretty much do anything! You are my 'hero' and I think about you every day when I'm running my long runs (some of them 30+ km) in the desert sun. I know that the challenges and obstacles that I face are mere mole hills compared to what my grandmother faced. Thank you for being such a great 'tough old bird', Grandma! You inspire me! Love Jas" The funeral service was held on Monday, May 2, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Five Oaks Shared Ministry in Naicam, Sask. Officiated by Pastor Rev. Evelyn Rigby. Lana Thompson was musician. Memorial books attendants: Linda Souter and Ann Long; Scripture readers: Barbara Smadu and Ashley Pool. Grandson Blair Smadu delivered the eulogy. Honorary Pallbearers: Linda Souter, Ellie Peterson, Florence Warring, Irene Scaife, Hjordis Hawkins, Ann Long, Nora Cross, Nelma Hagen and Evelyn Buckton; Active Pallbearers: grandchildren Delmar Smadu, Jasmine Brawn, Michael Weseen, Chad Weseen, Darcy Weseen and Amber Kosowan. Following interment at Naicam Cemetery, granddaughter Jillian Weseen presented a slide show she'd prepared honoring Grandma's life, prior to lunch served by Naicam U.C.W. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Narfason's Funeral Chapel. Memorial donations in Eunice's name may be directed to: The Arthritis Society, #110-2550 12th Ave., REGINA, Sask. S4P 3X1.
