The death of Mr. Walter Germann of Humboldt occurred peacefully at his residence on December 29, 2011. He was 81 years of age. Walter was born to Bernhard and Helen (nee Knorr) Germann on the farm near Luseland. He attended a rural school and, for high school, was enrolled in Denzil and Kerrobert. After completing high school he attended Normal School in Saskatoon, training as a teacher. His teaching career included a principalship at St. John's School, Denzil. Since rural school teaching experience was a general requirement as a superintendent, he taught in a rural school near Denzil for two years covering Grades 1 to 10 in a one-room setting. He later taught in Kerrobert Elementary School. Subsequently, he took a position as a teaching principal at Battleford Central School, completed the requirements for a Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Saskatchewan, and became assistant superintendent to J A Carr in the Humboldt Rural School Unit. He then took a position as teacher and principal at both St. Augustine and St. Dominic School in Humboldt. Later, he became teaching principal at St. Augustine only. He retired from teaching in 1985, a career covering 35 years. Walter and Alice were married in 1961 in Humboldt. Throughout his life, Walter was actively involved in Church and community. This includes the Humboldt Recreation Committee, St. Augustine Parish Building Committee, many Catholic organizations, the Humboldt Music Festival, the band parents, the HCI School Community Council, the advancement of Community Health Care, he supported St. Thomas Moore College and St. Peter's College, he also showed an active interest in the Ursuline and Elizabethan communities and many others. Although a great deal of his time was spent at work and in the community, Walter still found time for family. He enjoyed following his children's activities as they were growing up and had the good fortune to be part of his grandchildren's lives. "I want my family to remember me for being a husband, father and grandpa."
