Because of the prevalence of floral motifs in their beading and embroidery, the Dakota and Cree referred to the Métis as the "Flower Beadwork People," according to Metisprint.ca

HUMBOLDT — To mark National Indigenous Peoples Day, the Humboldt Gallery is offering a free, drop-in dot art painting activity inspired by the work of Métis artist Phyllis Poitras-Jarrett.

The activity will run from 1 to 4 p.m. on June 21, which is the National Indigenous Peoples Day, at the Gallery, located at 601 Main Street. Participants are invited to create their own dot art paintings, drawing inspiration from Poitras-Jarrett’s vibrant beadwork-style pieces.

Métis dot art, like Poitras-Jarrett’s work, draws inspiration from traditional floral beadwork patterns passed down through generations.

The event also marks the final day to view her exhibition of dot art paintings currently on display at the gallery.

Admission is free and open to all ages.
