Melfort's Thomas Motors working on 10,000 square foot expansion

The new 10,000 square foot facility is expected to be open in early spring.

MELFORT — A local dealership is building a 10,000 square foot facility.

Brian Farley, owner/operator of Thomas Motors in Melfort, said he and his two partners, Lonis Benane and Ian Shapiro, are excited to see the building taking shape.

The shovels hit the ground in May 2023 and Farley was hoping for a completion date before Christmas, but with a few delays, he anticipates an early spring completion.

“The new building is being built completely by local contractors and all materials and supplies are all sourced from businesses in Melfort,” Farley said. “No hands from outside of town have laid a hand on it.”

The building will have a 5,500 sq ft new wash bay and mechanic area that includes seven overhead doors. The ceiling will be 20 feet high and have a showroom that will be able to house pontoon boats, quads and all their ATVs, boats and snowmobiles.

The decision to build by Farley and his partners came about two years ago when they made the leap to buy out Farley’s father, Darrell. Darrell was a part of the Thomas Motors family since the early 1980s. He went on to purchase the business in 1997.

Farley said people will still see Darrell around the shop as he helps his son with running for parts and likes to lend a hand whenever he is needed. Farley was born and raised in Melfort and is proud to call Melfort home with his wife, Danielle and two kids, Anna and Aden.

The Honda business will remain in the current building, Farley said, which was part of the purchase agreement that Honda would be a standalone business in that building. The current building will be getting a facelift as well. Renovations will include new flooring, paint, reception area, waiting area with coffee bar, all to Honda’s standards with all new furniture as well.

“It will be extensive and very sharp looking.”

Thomas Motors employs 20 full-time staff.
