Another Battlefords resident has earned a Royal Conservatory of Music gold medal by earning the best grade in the province in her instrument and grade level at RCM examinations this year.

Katrina MacKinnon, whose teacher is Diane Gryba, earned the award for Grade 8 Piano.

"I was very excited when I got the news my teacher is just wonderful, she gives all her energy to help me do my best."

Beyond the piano, Katrina, who is in Grade 10, also sings in the Kamala Youth Choir. To her, music is more than simply an activity, but a far more meaningful practice.

"I find music very uplifting. Music is about connecting to people, soul to soul, so that really inspires me to practise lots."

Katrina, along with Cailyn Driedger, is one of two Battlefords residents who won RCM Gold Medals. A total of 5,500 music students took examinations in Saskatchewan this year across all instruments and grade levels.
