Eleven UCHS athletes travelled to provincials the first weekend of June. Although athletes were not able to hit the podium there were some personal bests and the coaches were proud of all achievements.
Unity Public School had a fantastic day June 1 for their annual track and field meet. Kids hopped, ran and threw their way into ribbon displays adorning their apparel.
The annual Unity Western Days took place last weekend. Rodeo queen contestants were around for the weekend and the winner was Nikita Lantz, with Shirraya Winterhalt coming in a close second and Tamara Ubell rounding out the field. The market on Saturday morning was a new addition and was well received as it featured farmers' market, craft tables and garage sale table. The Chamber of Commerce had volunteers serving up a barbecue on Main street Saturday. The parade had 22 entries, and kudos to those businesses and organizations that band together to put an entry in the annual parade. Attendance at the rodeo was down, always a challenge for organizers.
Congratulations to Arlene Southgate who was chosen as 2012 Citizen of the Year at Friday night's western day's banquet. This is the second big accolade bestowed on the well deserving Southgate as she was also named volunteer of the year at a Rivers West banquet and awards dinner earlier this spring.
Last Friday the kick off barbecue for the swimming pool opening was held with funds raised going towards new pool equipment. Swimming lessons in session one will begin June 5 and run throughout the summer. Check at the pool for hours of operation as well as swim lesson sets left by calling Stephanie at 228-2133.
Mosquito division baseball held a tournament in Unity on June 2 with all four teams from Unity participating as well as four out of town teams.
UCHS held their annual awards night Tuesday. One of the highlights for the evening was the raising of the provincial curling banner won earlier this year. Eligible students have also received invitations for the annual Living Sky awards night in Battleford June 14 celebrating the same successes division wide.
A grad ecumenical service will be held at St. Peter's Church June 12, followed by refreshments and fellowship in St. Peter's Hall.
Soccer fields are still active with over 100 kids in various divisions. If you ever need something to smile about come and watch the kids as they frolic and run learning their soccer skills.
To register for a summer preschool program, geared for kids ages 3-4 and running afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m., call the town office at 228-2621. Through various grants and initiatives they are able to provide a facilitator and several assistants.
As there is only one month left in regular season of ball, teams prepare for provincial quests in all divisions.
The golf course has been busy with their weekly men's and ladies' nights of golf as well as regular golfers hitting the fairways. Congratulations to JP Boser who has advanced to provincial competition.
KC rescue is holding a fundraising bottle drive June 13, so have your bottles and cans set out ready for pick up or take your take them to Sarcan and ask to have the refund directed to KC Rescue.
Congratulations to the Unity Sparks, Brownies and Guides who won the group contest prize for co-operative week of volunteering, sponsored by Delta Co-op and Unity Credit Union. The volunteer contest was held over a month to encourage residents to commit to a minimum of two hours of volunteer activity in the community. The individual winner was Cheryl Johnstone who committed an afternoon to working in the Paw Park.
Another bid has been put in for the TSN Kraft Celebration tour that sees the TSN sports crew tour the Top 10 voted on communities to win a $25,000 prize donation to help their community. Watch for details as we will need help garnering votes for the cause.
Coffee row wives are celebrating the end of hockey season, for a few short months anyway. A Rider exhibition game June 13 is sure to spark some debate.
